Matthew Simpson, MD FACS, FASMBS, FPD-MBS has been doing bariatric surgery since arriving in Springfield more than a decade ago, he has performed thousands of cases, including laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, adjustable gastric banding, sleeve gastrectomy, duodenal switch, single anastomosis duodenal switch, laparoscopic bariatric revisions and advanced endoscopic cases.

Dr. Simpsons passion for bariatric surgery is based on his knowledge that morbid obesity is one of the vastly under-treated diseases, affecting not just health, but quality and length of life. He is committed to using science and state-of-the-art technologies, via an integrated, team-based approach, to give his patients hope and results. 

Dr. Simpson performs multiple different bariatric surgical procedures and is the only surgeon in Southwest Missouri performing the Single Anastomosis Duodenal Switch. 

Dr. Simpson grew up in Springfield and graduated from Kickapoo High School. He received his undergraduate degree from Pittsburg State University. He then earned his medical degree from the Ross University School of Medicine and became interested in bariatric surgery during his residency at Marshall University School of Medicine. He went on to complete a fellowship in Trauma and Surgical Critical Care at the University of Kentucky.

Dr. Simpson has a special interest in revisional surgery including band revisions; converting bands, sleeves, vertical banded gastroplasty, and Nissen fundoplication’s to alternative procedures; re-making bypasses, and correcting complications. 

He is board certified in General Surgery, Trauma & Critical Care Surgery and was one of the first in the nation to gain the Focused Practice Designation from the American Board of Surgery. In addition, he is board-certified by the American Board of Obesity Medicine.
